The Design Process

Just how do you get from the ceiling rose of the Arc de Triomphe to a bright red and orange album cover design?
From Inspiration
The design brief for this project was to produce an embroidery that could be used as a wedding album cover. The couple's honeymoon was to be spent in Paris so the Arc de Triomphe was selected as the source for the design.

Looking at the ceiling rose design you can see that it is based on squares within squares and a central circle.

Through Design
This aspect of the design was taken and developed further using a red and orange colour scheme.

Using paper that I had coloured with inks, and gold foil from sweet wrappers, the design was developed further. The use of the inks adds to the design by adding subtle colour changes.

The individual motifs were each cut up into four pieces and re-arranged around four uncut motifs. The finished paper design looked rather flat so it was scanned into Paint Shop Pro and the enamel filter used to give the effect of contours.

Now came the task of interpreting the design in stitch. Various samples were worked before settling on the final version. Gold transfer foil was applied to red organza. This was then layered with orange habotai and machine stitched. Hand stitched seeding and satin stitch were then added. Each square was padded to give texture.

A sumptuous orange velvet border with gold couching detail and more machine stitching finished the design.
