Velvet Stitch This is a great textural stitch. It can be trimmed to give the effect of velvet, left with a longer pile or left with a looped pile. The picture shows a longer trimmed variety.
Step 1 Start work at the bottom left hand corner of the area to be filled. Come up at 1 and go down at 2, to form a half cross stitch. You can work over one or two intersections of thread.
| Step 2 Repeat step 1 but leave a loop. You can make sure your loops are of even length by looping them round a pin inserted a set number of holes away from the stitch. |
Step 3 Complete the original cross stitch by coming up at 4 and down at 3, trapping the loop as you do so. Repeat the stitch to fill the area to be filled. When you have finished stitching you can either leave the loops or cut them to form a pile.
