This free-motion machine embroidery sample was stitched on dissolvable fabric. First a supporting grid of machine stitched lines was built up. Then threads were caught into the stitching. Left over snippets of thread from the Candy Squares needlepoint design were used (never throw anything away!). To make the long tufted areas thread was wrapped around folded paper strips and stitched down along the middle of the strip. The threads were then cut and the paper removed. Finally the fabric was dissolved in water to leave the finished sample.
The circular pattern of the stitch on this piece causes the fabric to distort and ripple giving the piece a textural quality. The fabrics are all hand painted silks.
